Wrestling Essentials: Stance, Motion & Takedown Techniques

This instructional is a surface level run through of essential wrestling skills for athletes looking to improve their wrestling and jiujitsu. From stance and motion to takedowns from every position, we cover it all.

I recommend picking a few of these techniques that feel natural for you and mastering them. No need to get good at all of them!

The sprawl go behind, snatch single, and the sweep single are my favorites for jiujitsu. They're simple, relatively low risk, and they work on larger opponents.

Future videos will cover strategies and nitty gritty details in each position! Starting with the sweep single and wrestling for jiujitsu.

Who am I?

I'm a former DI Wrestler at Princeton University and a blue belt in jiujitsu. Outside of both sports, I enjoy coding, learning about bitcoin, and finding ways to improve my health.

You can find more of what I'm up to on my website.

Why did I create this instructional?

I teach wrestling at the jiujitsu studio I train at. The moves in this instructional are helping everyone gain confidence in their stand up game and transition away from " scooting" 😂.

My hope is that this will do the same for you. Or at the very least, help you review skills and techniques that will level up your game.

Problems you may be facing:

  • Feeling Inadequate in Stand-Up Wrestling: "I feel completely lost and out of my depth when I'm on my feet during a match. It's like everyone else knows what they're doing, and I'm just winging it."
  • Uncertainty in Adopting a Wrestling Stance: "Every time I try to get into a wrestling stance, I feel unsure and anxious. I keep wondering if I'm doing it wrong and what my opponents think of me."
  • Overwhelmed by the Idea of Takedowns: "The thought of executing a takedown fills me with dread. I'm constantly worried that I'll mess it up or freeze up completely during a crucial moment."
  • Anxiety About Coaching Techniques: "As a coach, I'm plagued by self-doubt. I constantly question my ability to teach effective techniques to my athletes, worrying if I'm leading them astray."

What this instructional will teach you:

  • How to get into a wrestling stance, move, and defend your legs
  • How to take your opponent down from standing
  • How to take your opponent down without touching their legs
  • How to take your opponent down from behind them
  • How to stop a leg attack and take the back
